Time is nearly up on my University experience so I thought I’d put together my top 5 songs that form a soundtrack to my life here. Anyone who knows me would see these as pretty predictable, but here goes anyway:
5 – Black Eyed Peas & Sergio Mendes – Mas Que Nada
I heard this a few months before it hit the charts in the run up to the 2006 World Cup, and it just characterises Summer Term of First Year for me. The summer was long and the nights went on forever. We would often go onto the field in the middle of the night to light a bonfire and most of the term was spent with Chris in County Bar watching football and drinking snakebite. It was the term we went to see England at Old Trafford and all got England shirts in preparation, and was topped off by Extrav, the best night of First Year.
4 – Explosions in the Sky – Your Hand in Mine
Craig got me into this band, and this song is my favourite of theirs. Despite it being 8 minutes long, it would find its way to the top of my most played list every week. Atmospheric and brilliant.
3 – Jose Gonzales – Heartbeats
I first heard this song on the Sony Bravia TV ad and, with Mas Que Nada, became a staple of my first year. I even had the Sony ad put on my MySpace page for a while. The original by The Knife deserves a mention too, which Kiran introduced me to at the quiz.
2 – Modest Mouse – The World At Large
First heard on our radio show as a request came in from Craig, this is another one of those that I just hear and begin reminiscing again. The radio show was, for its sort, popular and funny; a highpoint. It’s a shame we swore too much and weren’t invited back.
1 – The Shins – New Slang
I heard it on the Scrubs soundtrack and it’s become one of my favourite songs. Haunting at times but still uplifting, the lyrics, despite being a bit random, seemed to describe my often futile attempts with women. If only they took to me like a gul takes to the wind…
